60 days in the Alps by camper with 2 toddlers: our full route

Our full 60-day Alps route by camper with two toddlers: Italy, Switzerland and France, with every campsite we stayed at.

ENGLISH VERSION 🇬🇧

This summer we did something we’d been talking about for years: almost two months on the road, in a camper, through the Alps. Italy, Switzerland, France, then Italy again. Two toddlers, one van, a lot of campsites, and more gelato than we’ll ever admit 🍦

Before the detailed posts (Milan and Lake Garda, the Dolomites, Switzerland, and more), here’s the whole route in one place, with every campsite we stayed at. If you’re planning something similar with small kids, this is the post to save.

🧳 How we got there: plane + train + camper

We split up for the start. My husband drove the camper all the way from Romania to Bolzano. I flew with the kids to Milan, which with two toddlers is a lot easier than two days on the road in a car seat.

We spent a couple of slow days in Milan and on Lake Garda, then took the train up to Bolzano, where we met him and the camper. From there, the real road trip began.

Tip: if one parent is happy to drive, this split works really well. The kids skip the long transit days, and you meet already in holiday mode.

🗺️ The route, stop by stop

🇮🇹 Milan and Lake Garda (10–11 July). One afternoon at the Duomo, then a quiet day in Desenzano del Garda by the lake.

🇮🇹 Dolomites, Alta Badia (12–17 July). Our first campsite: Camping Sass Dlacia in San Cassiano. Cable cars to Piz Sorega and La Villa, easy walks to Rifugio Scotoni and Capanna Alpina.

🇨🇭 Lake Lucerne (20–25 July). TCS Camping Luzern-Horw, right on the lake. The Swiss Museum of Transport, the Natur- und Tierpark Goldau, Lucerne old town and Mount Pilatus from Kriens.

What’s next

Each of these stops gets its own post, with photos and what worked (and didn’t) with two toddlers. Next up: Alta Badia, then Switzerland 🇨🇭
