The Dolomites with 2 toddlers: a week in Alta Badia by camper 🏔️🚐

A week at Camping Sass Dlacia in San Cassiano with two toddlers: water play at Piz Sorega, deck chairs on Piz La Ila, and apple strudel with alpacas at Rifugio…

ENGLISH VERSION 🇬🇧

After Milan and Lake Garda, the real road trip finally started. We took the train up the Adige valley to Bolzano, where Andrei was waiting with the camper he had driven all the way from Romania. One hour later we were climbing into Val Badia, and by the afternoon we were parked under the pale walls of the Dolomites. Our home for the week: San Cassiano, in Alta Badia.

⛺ Camping Sass Dlacia, San Cassiano

We stayed at Camping Sass Dlacia, just outside San Cassiano. Pitches between the pine trees, the mountains right above you, and a small playground in the woods. The first thing we saw when we parked was a sign that pretty much sums up the whole week.

Why it worked with toddlers: it’s quiet, the kids can play on the gravel and the grass around the camper all day, and San Cassiano is a few minutes away for bread, gelato and the lifts.

🚠 Piz Sorega: water, sun loungers and the best view

On our first full day we took the gondola from San Cassiano up to Piz Sorega. At the top there’s a whole play area with a shallow mountain stream where kids can walk in the water. Ours did not want to leave 💦

Then lunch, then the sun loungers on the meadow, then a nap for literally everyone. The view from up there goes all the way across Alta Badia.

Tip: bring a change of clothes and a small towel. Your kids will end up in the water, guaranteed.

🚠 Piz La Ila, above La Villa

The next day we did the same thing on the other side of the valley: the gondola from La Villa up to Piz La Ila. More playgrounds, more lawn, and deck chairs in front of Club Moritzino. The weather turned grey in the afternoon, but even with clouds the view was something else.

🌲 A slow day at the campsite

With two toddlers, you need a day where nothing happens. We had breakfast outside, played in the woods next to the campsite, and that was it. Honestly, some of the best memories are from these days.

🥾 Rifugio Scotoni: strudel and alpacas

On our last full day we went for a morning walk among the alpine roses, with the whole valley in front of us.

In the afternoon we walked up to Capanna Alpina directly from the campsite and then hiked up to Rifugio Scotoni. It’s kind of an easy, wide gravel road through the forest, fine with a carrier or with kids walking slowly. At the top: apple strudel on a wooden terrace, alpacas next door, and the huge rock walls of the Fanes all around. This was our favourite afternoon of the week.

On the way back, the valley glowed in the evening light, and we stopped at the old stone huts near Capanna Alpina.

⛺ Camping Sass Dlacia, San Cassiano

🚠 Piz La Ila, deasupra La Villa
