Around Mont Blanc with 2 toddlers: Martigny, Chamonix and Les Saisies by camper

A week around Mont Blanc with two toddlers and a camper: St Bernard dogs in Martigny, the Mont-Blanc Express to Lac d’Emosson, Val Ferret, Chamonix and summer luge in Les…

ENGLISH VERSION 🇬🇧

From Lake Lucerne we drove south-west, into the Rhône valley, and for one week our whole world turned around one mountain: Mont Blanc. We saw it from Switzerland, from France and from the top of a chairlift, and it never got old.

⛺ Martigny: TCS Camping Les Neuvilles and the St Bernard dogs

Our base for the Swiss part was TCS Camping Les Neuvilles in Martigny. Flat pitches, mountains on every side and everything you need within walking distance. Like the other TCS campsite we stayed at in Lucerne, it was clean, organised and very easy with little kids.

On the first afternoon we went to Barryland, the museum of the famous St Bernard dogs, right in Martigny. The dogs are huge, calm and very close, and for the kids this was the highlight of the Swiss part of the trip 🐶

🚂 The Mont-Blanc Express and Lac d’Emosson

The next day we left the camper at the campsite and took the Mont-Blanc Express, the little red train that climbs from Martigny over the border to Chamonix. Big windows, glaciers outside and a lot of tunnels. With small kids it’s an easy way to see serious mountain scenery without a long drive.

On the way we stopped at Le Châtelard and went up to Lac d’Emosson with the funicular and the small panoramic train. The water is unreal: bright turquoise, with the Mont Blanc massif right behind it. If you only do one thing in this area with kids, do this one. It’s all transport, almost no walking, and the view at the top is huge.

And then Chamonix itself, with Mont Blanc towering over the town.

🌲 Gorges du Durnand and Val Ferret (Switzerland)

On day three we walked through the Gorges du Durnand: wooden walkways and stairs bolted into a narrow gorge, with waterfalls all the way up. It’s short, but steep in places, so the carrier is your friend here. We finished at the little café at the entrance.

In the afternoon we drove up the Swiss Val Ferret to La Fouly, at the end of the valley. There’s a short trail for kids called “Charlotte la Marmotte”, with a little booklet and stops along the way, and a glacier hanging right above the village.

🚠 Champex-Lac and La Breya

The next morning we went to Champex-Lac and took the chairlift up to La Breya. From the top we walked along the ridge, Andrei with one of the kids in the carrier, and the whole Rhône valley opened up below us. One of the best views of the summer, for very little effort.

🇫🇷 A day in Chamonix

Then we crossed into France with the camper. We spent a whole day in Chamonix: a forest trail with information panels for kids, the town centre, the river Arve rushing through town, and crêpes, obviously. We slept at a camper area just outside town.

🛷 Les Saisies: summer luge and cows with a view

From Chamonix we drove to Les Saisies, a ski resort that in summer turns into a huge green playground. We parked the camper on the plateau, and for two days the kids rode the summer luge, ran around the playgrounds, and we sat on deck chairs looking at Mont Blanc from the other side.

On the last evening we moved to Camping de Domelin, near Beaufort. Quiet, green, and the peaks above the campsite glowing pink at sunset. A perfect last night in France.

🛏️ Where to stay

Not travelling by camper? These are the places we’d base ourselves in: Martigny for the Swiss side, Champex-Lac for the lake and the La Breya chairlift, Chamonix for Mont Blanc, and Les Saisies for a quiet, green few days with the kids.

What’s next

From France we crossed back into Italy over a high mountain pass, to Courmayeur, Val Ferret and Val Veny, on the Italian side of Mont Blanc 🇮🇹
