Val di Fiemme, Passo Rolle and a night under the Tre Cime: a family week in the Dolomites

A family week in the Dolomites with three kids and a camper: a kids’ campsite in Bellamonte, Passo Rolle, Lake Misurina and a night under the stars below the Tre…

ENGLISH VERSION 🇬🇧

For most of the summer it was the four of us and the camper. Then Andrei’s brother Mihai and Bell, our niece, joined us, and the camper went from “cosy” to “very cosy”. Three adults, three kids, one camper, and, once we left the campsite, one tiny bathroom for six people. Let’s just say we learned a lot about timing, patience and who takes the longest in the morning (we’re not naming names, but it wasn’t the kids).

It was crowded, loud and a bit chaotic, and it was also one of the best weeks of the summer. The kids had cousins to run around with all day, the adults had someone to talk to after bedtime, and there was always an extra pair of hands when someone needed carrying.

⛺ A campsite chosen for the kids: Fiemme Village

With three kids under five, we didn’t pick the campsite for the view (although it has one). We picked it for survival: Fiemme Village in Bellamonte, Val di Fiemme, at about 1,350 m, one of the Club del Sole family camping villages. Kids’ activities every morning and afternoon, playgrounds everywhere, lots of space, and the star of the show: a mini disco every single evening at 20:30.

The kids talked about the mini disco from breakfast on. The adults loved it too, for slightly different reasons: twenty minutes of dancing meant twenty minutes of sitting down with a drink outside the camper. Highly recommended.

🏔️ Passo Rolle and Baita Segantini

Our first big outing was Passo Rolle, a short drive up from Bellamonte. You get out of the car and the Cimon della Pala, often called “the Matterhorn of the Dolomites”, is right there, showing off, with the whole Pale di San Martino group behind it.

From the pass, a wide gravel track goes gently up to Baita Segantini, a small hut right under the peak. It’s the perfect walk for little legs: short, wide, not too steep, and with a new view every five minutes. The kids walked most of it holding hands, and when someone declared they couldn’t take one more step, there were three adults to negotiate with.

The cows grazing under the chairlift were, of course, more interesting than the Dolomites. Next to the hut there’s a small lake, and the kids were in it within about thirty seconds. We also stopped at Capanna Cervino, another hut near the pass, because snacks.

Tip: go early, the parking at Passo Rolle fills up by late morning. And bring sun hats: there’s almost no shade up there.

🌲 Lazy days and a water playground in the sky

Not every day needs a big plan, especially with three kids. Some days we just did the forest trails around Bellamonte, which have balance beams and little gravel and wooden paths, and the kids walked them back and forth like it was the best thing in the world.

The big hit was the gondola from Bellamonte. Next to the gondola station starts the Giro d’Ali, a themed trail for kids, and at the top there’s a huge green area with a water playground: streams, channels and stones to splash around in, with the cabins gliding over your head. We went once. The kids asked to go back. We went back. Nobody regretted it, except maybe the person who forgot the spare clothes.

Tip: pack a change of clothes and a towel for every kid. They will get wet. All of them.

🏞️ Passo Giau and Lake Misurina

When we left Val di Fiemme, we took the scenic road north. First stop: Passo Giau, where the kids played on the grass under the sharp tower of Ra Gusela while the adults took the same photo forty times. Then, in the late afternoon, Lake Misurina: flat calm water, mountains reflected in it, and the kids throwing stones until we ran out of stones.

✨ A night under the Tre Cime

That evening we drove up to Rifugio Auronzo and slept there in the camper, right below the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Six people, one camper, one bathroom, parked under one of the most famous mountains in the Alps. The bathroom queue had a great view, at least. We sat on the grass in hoodies with the kids on our laps and watched the sun go down behind the Cadini di Misurina. For once, nobody was talking.

Later that night we went outside again, and the sky was unreal: no lights, no clouds, and so many stars that you could see the Milky Way. We stood there with our phones much longer than we’d like to admit, and this is the photo that came out of it.

The next morning we walked from Auronzo towards Rifugio Lavaredo, to small green lakes right below the Tre Cime. With three kids it was slow, with a lot of breaks, snacks and stones thrown into every lake on the way, but walking there all together was the highlight of the week.

Tip: it gets cold up there in the evening, even in August, so bring warm layers for everyone. If you drive up, check the toll road and the overnight rules for the Auronzo area before you go.

👋 One last night by a lake, and goodbye

Mihai and Bell were flying home from Treviso, so we headed south. On the way we stopped for one last night next to a small lake, nothing planned, just a quiet spot we found. In the morning the three kids sat by the water together one more time, and then we drove to Treviso to say goodbye.

Back to four people and one bathroom. It felt very spacious. And a bit too quiet.

✨ O noapte sub Tre Cime
