Courmayeur with 2 toddlers: Val Ferret, Val Veny and e-bikes under Mont Blanc

Five days on the Italian side of Mont Blanc with two toddlers: camping in Val Veny and Val Ferret, a walk towards Rifugio Bonatti and e-bikes with child seats up…

ENGLISH VERSION 🇬🇧

After a week going around Mont Blanc from Switzerland and France, it was time to see it from Italy. We crossed back over a high mountain pass, with trails, alpine lakes and peaks all around, and stopped for a break at a lake near the top before heading down towards the Aosta Valley.

⛺ Camping in Val Ferret

Courmayeur sits between two valleys that run along the foot of Mont Blanc: Val Veny on one side and Val Ferret on the other. We camped in Val Ferret, at Camping Tronchey: simple, green and surrounded by peaks, with the glaciers right above your head when you open the camper door in the morning. Val Veny we saw by e-bike (more on that below).

🍦 Courmayeur town

Courmayeur itself is small, pretty and very walkable: one main pedestrian street, stone houses, mountains at the end of every alley. We did the classic toddler programme: a slow walk, gelato, hot chocolate, and a lot of stairs climbed and descended for no reason at all.

🥾 Val Ferret: Rifugio Bonatti, picnics and cows

Our favourite day was in Val Ferret. We walked up towards Rifugio Bonatti, one of the most famous huts in the area, with the Grandes Jorasses right across the valley. The path climbs steadily, so Andrei carried one of the kids in the carrier and the other walked as much as possible.

On the way down we had a picnic on the forest path and stopped at a mountain stream where the kids threw stones into the water for what felt like an hour. Honestly, that’s the part they still talk about.

🚲 Val Veny by e-bike

The next day we tried something new: we rented e-bikes with child seats and rode up Val Veny, the valley we hadn’t seen yet. The road climbs gently along the valley, with the Mont Blanc massif and its glaciers right next to you, and the electric motor does the hard part. We rode up to the wide plateau of Lac Combal, a marshy lake surrounded by moraines, near Cabane du Combal.

Tip: e-bikes with child seats are a great way to cover distance in a valley with toddlers. Book ahead in August, and bring jackets: it gets cold quickly when the clouds come in.

👋 A last morning in Val Ferret

On our last morning we went back to Val Ferret for one more look. The kids sat in the grass and looked at the mountains for a long time, which with two toddlers is rare.
