Switzerland by camper with 2 toddlers: Lugano, the Gotthard and Lake Lucerne

A week in Switzerland with two toddlers and a camper: Lugano, the Gotthard tunnel, our campsite on Lake Lucerne, the Swiss Museum of Transport and the deer at Tierpark Goldau.

ENGLISH VERSION 🇬🇧

After a week in the Dolomites, we pointed the camper north. The plan was simple: Lugano, through the Gotthard, and a few days around Lake Lucerne. The reality was also simple: ice cream, playgrounds, trains, and two kids who decided Switzerland is basically one big museum made for them 🚂✈️

🌊 Lugano: lake, mountains, gelato

First stop: Lugano. Blue lake, green mountains rising straight out of the water, and a promenade made for strollers.

We did what we do best on holiday: we found a terrace by the water and ordered gelato 🍦 Two toddlers in sunglasses, very serious about their ice cream, with the lake behind them. That’s the photo of the trip, honestly.

🚇 Through the Gotthard

Then the Gotthard tunnel. Seventeen kilometres of “are we there yet?” 😅 And on the other side: a completely different Switzerland, with turquoise water and steep cliffs dropping into the lake.

⛺ Camping by the lake

We stayed at TCS Camping Luzern-Horw, right on the shore of Lake Lucerne. Little beach, sandy playground, shade sails, and grass where the kids could run barefoot. Evenings by the camper, ducks visiting, everyone asleep early. Camper life at its best.

A little secret of our summer: Andrei was working that week, from the camper, with the laptop on the table. So on weekdays it was just me and the kids, exploring Lucerne by train and bus, and back to the campsite in the evening. If you’re thinking “I could never do this alone with two toddlers”: you can. Switzerland makes it easy.

🚂 Swiss Museum of Transport, Lucerne

If you go to Lucerne with small kids, go to the Verkehrshaus (Swiss Museum of Transport). Trains you can climb into, real planes, a mini construction site with hard hats and wheelbarrows, and a lot of buttons to press.

My two spent hours there. I spent hours following them. Everyone was happy.

Our honest summary of a holiday with toddlers, as we joked in our stories that day: it’s not all-inclusive, there’s no kids’ club, and they’re “too small to remember anyway”. But we will remember 🤍

🦌 Deer, fountains and playgrounds

The next day was all about animals: the Natur- und Tierpark Goldau, a short train ride from Lucerne, where the deer come right up to you. The kids were brave for about three seconds, then hid behind my legs, then wanted to go again.

After that, a fountain to splash in and a playground in the forest. Simple day, very happy kids.

🌸 Lucerne old town

Our last day: Lucerne itself. The wooden Chapel Bridge, flowers everywhere, a snack on the steps, and lots of looking at the river through the bridge windows.

Would we go back? ✔️

Yes. Switzerland is expensive, we won’t pretend otherwise. But with small kids everything just works: clean, safe, well organised, and full of places made for them.
